A female bed bug will lay between between 300 and 500 eggs in her life time usually in batches of up to eight at a time. The eggs are usually be laid in clusters around cracks, crevices and other rough textured surfaces close to the hiding places of the adult bugs.

The eggs are around 1mm  long and are white in colour – often likened to a grain of rice. They are stuck firmly to whatever surface they are layed on with a sticky “glue” like substance.

The bed bug eggs are often inpermiable to chemical solutions, so just when you think you have killed every last bug a new batch of nymphs will hatch and the process begin all over again. The best course of action to be sure that bed bug eggs have also been eradicated is to use a vacuum cleaner on every surface. Bed Bug Nymph

Bed  bug nymphs will usually hatch from the eggs after approximately 12 days. Newly hatched nymphs are beige in colour but turn a reddish colour after their first feed of fresh human blood!  A bug will go through 5 stages of developement before maturity – this process can take anything from 32 to 48 days.

Adult bed bugs a reddish brown colour and measure around 5.5mm in length.It has been know for bed bugs to survive in unoccupied buildings for up to one year and can quite easily go without feeding for about seven months.

These blood sucking bugs will take up residence in cracks, and crevices in floors and walls but will also hide out in more obscure places such as in light switches, smoke alarms, radios etc.
The best treatment is to clear the room, vacuum EVERYTHING possible – mattresses, box springs, curtains, chairs. then either use a steam cleaner or a non toxic bed bug spray such as Bed Bug Bully.
